We can distinguish three types of lines:

• Level: with constant diameter along its entire length
• Double Taper: line with a central portion type Level that decreases towards the ends
• Weight Forward: line that in its first part is Level type, in the tip it is Taper and has a small thicker portion in the tip, which allows an additional weight, offering better casts
• Shooting Head: the same as the Weight Forward, varying only in that its tip is made of monofilament

In addition to these types of lines, there are other more special lines, manufactured for certain types of fishing, mainly deep-sea fishing.
COLORS

• Green: low visibility, it is very common, since it is suitable for almost any situation
• Transparent: perfect in very clear waters
• Gold: easier to see, so it is optimal in cases where we do not have too much light or when we need to be constantly aware of the line
• Brown brown: valid for muddy areas and turbid waters, where it will go practically unnoticed
• Fluorescent (blue/transparent): with sunlight its blue color will intensify, making it easier to see when casting and retrieving; however, it is invisible underwater

• Flexibility: stretch the monofilament and check its elongation before breakage. If it can elongate 20% without deforming (i.e. recovering its initial position), it is a good line, but if it remains stiff, it should be discarded
• Hardness: tie a knot in the line, if it is very hard it will break when subjected to a little more than half of its breaking load. If it breaks at 70%, it is a monofilament with good characteristics. Keep in mind that this resistance decreases by 10% when the yarn is wet
• Uniformity: pass the yarn between your fingers to detect possible deformations

If we want our fishing line to maintain its qualities, we must take proper care of it

• Protect it from light and air. Nylon is a material sensitive to ultraviolet rays, so if you are not going to use your lines for some time, it will be better to wind them on themselves in spirals that are as large as possible and enclose them in airtight jars
• Do not work with them without first soaking them for some time in water; in addition to working better you will avoid possible breakage to a greater extent
• Get into the habit of keeping your lines clean, they will give you much better results. Para take it off the reel and wipe it with a cloth dampened in soapy water. It is very important that if you are going to store it, dry it perfectly. Before use, wipe it with a natural chamois to polish it
• Do not hesitate to discard your old fishing lines, since you will not be able to demand much from them and they can give you an annoyance at the worst moment
• Change the entire reel line if the fishing activity is intense. Be careful where you throw it away; keep in mind that nylon is not biodegradable

RESISTANCE OF THE LINE

So a line with a strength of 2 pounds will hold a dead weight of 1 kilo; however, by increasing a few milligrams more, the line may break.
The maximum size allowed by the IGFA for sport fishing is 130 pounds, while the lightest line on the market has a strength of 2 pounds.
You should keep in mind that the lower the strength of the line, the thinner the line will be and the less visible it will be to the fish. In addition, a thin line weighs less than a line with a larger diameter and which offers a softer action, allowing the bait to move in the water in a more natural way; for this reason and taking into account that any of the baits we use will have a specific weight, we will consider that a heavy line will surely offer little naturalness.

We recommend that you always opt for a line whose resistance is twice the weight of the pieces caught. If you are going to fish in clear waters; in case you are going to fish in an area with abundant vegetation, a line three times bigger will be better.
Another of the fundamental points that must be taken into account in a line is its elasticity; that is, its stretching capacity. Thus, a line that is very elastic will transmit the pulls and the thrust made to the lure late; while if the elasticity is not very elastic, it will be faster but at the same time it will make both reel and rings suffer.
A term that we must know when talking about lines is that of memory, that is, the level of adaptation to a certain situation. Indeed, the line is constantly lodged in the spool, if it has a high memory, it will shoot out as if it were a spring, which will undoubtedly affect casting and retrieval.

You should know the meaning of each of these data

• Diameter: thickness of the line. It is usually given in millimeters, but can also be given in inches

• Weight at breakage: this depends on the elasticity and resistance of the line and is about twice the weight. It is given in yarns or pounds
