Airguns operate by using the force of compressed air. These weapons feature a power chamber where a spring is compressed and held in place by the trigger mechanism. When the trigger is pulled, the spring is released and activates a piston that compresses the air passing through the barrel and pushes the pellet. The force of the compressed air causes the pellet to be expelled at high speed.

There are different options among airguns: some models are single-shot, where the weapon must be cocked and a new pellet manually loaded for each shot; others use an integrated CO2 cartridge; and some have a built-in air reservoir. There are also airguns that use disposable CO2 cartridges and "pre-charged pneumatic" models, which tend to be more accurate than spring or piston models. In Italy, airguns are primarily used for sport shooting. The most commonly used calibers are 4.5 mm, 5.5 mm, 6.35 mm, and BB, with the first being the official caliber for competition.
