The Garrett AT GOLD has been designed to find tiny nuggets of gold in the most difficult terrain. It operates at 18kHz, the optimal frequency for gold-searching, which will allow you to find anything from nuggets the size of a grain of rice to the largest. It can work in the All Metal mode, which is the most recommended for prospecting, as it guarantees maximum depth and sensitivity possible. It is fully airtight, waterproof recommended for surface water but not for use in salt water.

The decision to buy a metal detector has to be something premeditated and we must avoid at all costs impulsive decisions since our experience in this hobby will depend essentially on the detector that we acquire.
- Therefore there are three points that we must consider before making the purchase:
- 1.
- It is very important to decide which objects we are going to look for since the technical characteristics of our detector will vary depending on the activity we are going to carry out, for example, looking for relics, coins, jewelry or precious metals such as gold
- . 2.
- Knowing those points to which we must give more or less importance in the choice, such as the differences between low frequency detectors, waterproof models, wireless or those that are multifunctional
- . 3. Admission to a metal detecting club. It is a good opportunity to learn more about this hobby and to share the experiences of buying your own detectors.
MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE DETECTOR
- 1. Discrimination: it is the ability to distinguish whether the received signal comes from a coin or garbage which can help to save digging time with those targets that we already discard beforehand.
- 2. Ground balancing: it allows us to avoid that the signal from the minerals of the ground we are working on enters the ground. There are different types of balancing:
- Automatic: in which a circuitry system detects the ground directly.
- Default: the balancing is already determined by the supplier.
- Manual: here we are the ones who adjust the balancing each time we are detecting a terrain.
- Multiple: offers the possibility of applying manual or automatic balancing.
- 3. Object identification: this is the ability offered by our detector to distinguish between coins of different values, aluminum or trash and the probability of detecting gold. These signals offered by the detector can either be audible with high tones for valuables and dull grunts for trash. In addition to the audible identification, it can offer us the possibility of the identification on LCD screen or with a visual system or with numerical systems.
- 4. Frequency of operation: refers to the number of times the signal is transmitted and received by the detector in one second. Two types are available:
- Low frequency: they are those that search at greater depth and is the most common option.
- High frequency: they are more sensitive to small objects and gold and have less ability to penetrate the ground.
- 5. Sensitivity: is the ability to detect metallic objects at a distance that if set at low levels we will hardly be able to perceive the sound and if set too high we will receive it distorted. So in certain situations we will need to decrease the sensitivity in those areas of high mineral content and increase it in areas of low content.
- 6. Search Depth: this is the penetration distance that our detector reaches with the ability to search for coins and other objects. Low frequency detectors offer better depth
GROUND ON WHICH WE ARE GOING TO WORK
It is very important to know in advance the ground on which we are going to work since both the climate and the composition of the soil are key variables in the correct choice of our detector.
- Detection on land: these are the most common and will locate coins, jewelry, relics and metal objects in general.
- Beach or underwater detection: if you are going to use it on a beach, lake, river or even in the sea, you will need an equipment with electrical characteristics adapted to water and salt.
- Gold prospecting detectors: with higher frequencies and specially designed for the salts and minerals that often appear in gold prospecting grounds.
- Multifunctional metal detectors: they will be very useful for two or more grounds that will be specified in each detector.
