The procedures are very simple

When selecting the most suitable shotgun, there are a series of characteristics that must be taken into account:
The length of the barrel: it is really surprising how many barrel lengths we can find, from 60 to 81 cm. But the most important thing about the length is that it allows the gun to be perfectly balanced. The length has little effect on ballistics, but it has a significant influence on aiming and handling. Thus, a shotgun with a long barrel length does not necessarily have a higher initial velocity or a longer range, but it will make aiming easier.
It is usually indicated that the most suitable length for semiautomatics is less than 71 cm (60 or 65 cm are enough) and for repeaters and less than 76 (70 or 71) for doubles or single shots.
As for the chokes we will have to choose between versatility or the quality of the plinking; since the fixed chokes offer a higher quality of plinking but a much lower versatility. Thus, semi-automatics and repeaters are usually fitted with interchangeable chokes, while competition guns are usually fitted with fixed chokes.
When selecting the type of barrel, we must bear in mind that rifled chokes are only useful for shooting at less than 15 meters. They are suitable (as a specialized solution) for woodcock, quail and rabbit.
It is also important to know what are the plates, these refer to the guns in which the most important elements of the percussion, trigger and safety mechanisms are housed either in some hollows placed in the lower part of the scale (half plate) or in some side plates attached behind the scale and which are usually oval in shape (full plate). The full length is usually safer, but has the disadvantage of complexity and requires much more careful adjustments.
Another very common option in one or two-shot guns is the automatic ejector; a device that launches empty cases out of the chamber.
The stock is, without a doubt, another of the most confusing issues. The so-called "English" stock is straight underneath, has no bulges or protrusions to support the palm of the hand and is suitable for guns with two triggers. The "pistolete" or "pistolet" ones offer a very uniform position and loading, as well as great ease when lifting the gun. The "Montecarlo" ones have a straight and higher spine, and are therefore suitable for the parts to be lifted.

In short, it is always good to know the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of each type of gun; but the final decision should be based on a thorough and realistic analysis of our needs, capabilities and tastes. It is, in short, a personal choice.
