The Windlass
Anchoring an anchor or hoisting it is a "nuisance", that is why a small element such as the windlass is so necessary on a boat.
The windlass will greatly facilitate this task, but it also provides us with the additional security that is necessary.
Before only the big boats had windlasses, something that has changed nowadays, since in the market we will be able to find small windlasses from four meters of length.
TYPES OF WINCHES
We can choose between two types of windlasses mainly:
- Manual: they have a good gear ratio, so they are ideal for boats where the power of the battery is limited
- Electric: they allow to raise or anchor an anchor without any physical effort
In addition, and within each of these groups, we can choose from:
- Vertical windlasses: in this type of windlass, the winch and sheave are mounted above deck, while the motor is below. It is therefore very suitable for boats with limited deck space
- Horizontal windlass: the complete assembly is on deck, although sometimes it can also be mounted in the anchor well
There are a multitude of windlasses of different designs on the market, so the final choice between one or the other will be mainly a matter of personal taste.
