How to choose the right hook
which hook should I choose? It all depends on the use we want to give it and for this we are going to know its structure and the different options that exist in the market.
TYPES OF POINTS
- Needle point or common point: they are generally reminiscent of the shape of sewing needles since they have a rounded tip and tapered edges.
- Inward curved point: they help to reduce the pressure needed for the hook to penetrate the fish, as it sticks easily thanks to the curvature of its point. It is very effective with the most jumping fish since they do not stop moving and this type of hook penetrates deep inside the fish itself.
- Concave point: they form a curve from the point to the base of the barb. They are ideal for fish with soft mouths or those that need to be worked gently so as not to tear their mouths.
- Lance tip: their angles are very sharp and the tip is perfectly aligned with the burr. They require more pressure than other hooks.
- Knife point: it has two sharp flat sides that penetrate perfectly into the fish. They are very easy to sharpen in case they lose their effectiveness.
- Short rods are perfect for fly fishing, although they also work with skittish or fast biting fish.
- Hooks with regular shafts are called multipurpose, so they are suitable for almost all species.
- Long shank hooks are useful for predatory, large-jawed fish or aggressive predators. They are easier to remove especially for novice anglers.
- American size: the smaller hooks have the highest numbering while the larger sizes have the lowest numbering, tending towards 0. Hooks for sport fishing range from 20/0 for the largest to 32 for the smallest.
- Japanese size: here the number 1 is the largest size while decreasing for the number to also reduce its size. For example, for sole fishing the 6 is used, for general fishing the 8.
TYPES OF HOOKS
- Para bait: they are used for both dead and live bait, they have a long shank and one or two burrs to put the bait in more easily.
- Para worms: they should be used with plastic lures or worm or worm-type vinyls. They are ideal for black bass or hard-fighting catches.
- Double hooks: they have two points and are very effective for rigging soft baits such as frogs or squid.
- Triple hooks: they offer the same effect as single hooks but multiplied by 3. They have a larger hooking surface and are more effective in retaining the catch.
- Original hook: it is very strong, has a sharp point to penetrate the jaws and is shorter with a very straight and aligned eye. It has a semicircle curvature and a very long point. Ideal for saltwater bait fishing and commercial fishing.
- Saltwater hook: long and very sharp point with acceptable thickness and good corrosion resistance.
- Circle hooks: the best option for fishing with caranada and large mouth fish.
Hook varieties and finishes such as metallic color finishes can be of great help on fishing trips. For example, the red color serves as a visual attraction for those fish that mistake it for the blood of a wounded fish. The finish will depend on each angler's own tastes and preferences, since none of them affect fishing negatively and can be details that can give us a boost.
