how to choose your diving mask?
The mask must fulfill the fundamental mission of isolating the eye from direct contact with the water, at the same time that it must create a suitable air environment to favor the correct visibility.
It goes without saying that it is very important and absolutely necessary to have a good diving mask if we want to practice this activity, already dangerous in itself, with the minimum of guarantees. But not only that, the choice of one mask or another can turn our diving into a delight or a torture.
There is a great variety of models and brands on the market, so before selecting the one that best suits us, it is convenient to know what are the requirements that it must meet
- Cover eyes and nose (to be able to breathe the air inside), leaving the mouth free and providing a good field of vision
- Tempered glass (never plastic), since this type of glass prevents it from shattering in case of breakage, which is undoubtedly a serious risk for our eyes
- Make sure that the glass is perfectly adjusted to the frame
- The frame should be made of top quality rubber or silicone (for a perfect fit), and it should also be anti-allergenic
- The fastening flange must have a grooved relief to prevent slipping and the corresponding loosening of the mask
- The edges in contact with the skin must be soft and firm at the same time, to fulfill two purposes: not to damage and to prevent water from entering
Place the mask without using the fastening strap and inhale through the nose, thus creating a vacuum. While inhaling gently, the mask should be well attached to the face and fastened, without falling, not allowing more air to enter.
Then, with the fastening strap in place, check that you can easily pinch your nose with your thumb and forefinger without deforming the rest of the mask or causing any air to escape or enter the mask.
