How to keep the fire extinguisher in perfect condition
Undoubtedly the fire extinguisher is the most effective and fastest way to fight fire, so they are one of the main elements of the safety equipment required on a boat.
But it is not enough to buy them just in case, we must know the different types that exist, know where to place them, how to use them and how to keep them in perfect condition in case the time comes.
Extinguishers have a limited life span, which is usually indicated next to the instructions for use.
During the life of the extinguisher, it is advisable to check periodically
- The flexible tube.
- The correct placement and shape of the safety pin.
- The width of the cone of projection.
- The width of the control system, those that have it.
- We will open to empty the powder and check that there are no lumps.
- Shake from time to time to avoid powder amalgamation.
- It should be refilled whenever it is used, even if it has only been partially used.
- Regularly check the pressure indicator at the bottom of the device.
Where to place the fire extinguisher
Two things must be taken into account when selecting the right place for the placement of the fire extinguishers inside the boat:
- We must have the possibility of reaching at least one of them from the bunk, from the galley and from the helm
- They shall be placed in such a way that the fire never impedes the possibility of reaching at least one of them
Use of Fire Extinguisher
The first thing to do is to read carefully the instructions that the extinguisher itself will bring written; although in general we can say that to put in operation the extinguisher two steps must be done:
- Pull the safety pin
- Hold or pull the handle
- Aim at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the trigger
- Project discontinuous jets
- Keep approximately one meter away from the fire, so that the powder acts with total effectiveness
